About the Fortis Fellowship

The Fortis Fellowship is a five-month leadership and professional-development programme for ambitious people from humble beginnings who want to create meaningful, large-scale positive change.

Educational and Experience Requirements

A university degree is not required to apply.

There is no fixed requirement concerning the number of years of professional experience. However, new cohorts generally include people with approximately one to five years of full-time work experience.

Applicants do not need a nomination or endorsement from a university, employer or institution. Nominated and independent applicants complete the same application and are evaluated against the same criteria.

What Is the Fortis Society Looking For?

Applications are assessed against four principal pillars.

1. Humble Beginnings

Applicants should have come from a low-income or otherwise resource-constrained background and demonstrated how they created opportunities despite limited access, guidance or support.

2. Altruistic Focus

The applicant’s work should contribute to improving other people’s lives. It does not need to be undertaken through a non-profit organisation or a position formally labelled as social-impact work.

3. Ambition at Scale

Applicants should have a significant vision for change and evidence that they have already begun working towards it.

4. Generosity

Applicants should demonstrate a willingness to help others, share knowledge, make introductions and contribute actively to the Fortis community.

Achievements are considered in relation to the opportunities and resources available to each applicant.

Time Commitment

From January to June 2027, fellows should expect approximately two to four hours of virtual sessions and mentorship per month.

Selected fellows must also be available to participate in the in-person cohort programming and Fortis Summit in Medellín in June 2027.

Application Requirements

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • A resume or portfolio presenting their work and achievements.
  • Three short written responses concerning their background, journey and future ambitions.
  • A two-minute video introduction recorded on a phone or computer.
  • A virtual interview, if shortlisted.

The Fortis Society estimates that completing the initial application takes approximately two to three hours.
