The paradigmatic shifts in theories of menstruation were indissoluble from the discursive construction of gender. Menstruation is considered a female phenomenon and fluctuations in physical and emotional states associated with menstruation are real experiences for many women. The articulation of real experience, however, is inherently subjective. Such articulations utilize a language which will render the experience identifiable and comprehensible, both for the individual and for society. It is the availability of a language for menstruation and the perpetual recreation of that language that menstruation becomes a social and medical concept as opposed to a real phenomenon. This is not to dismiss the significance of menstrual experience but to recognize that it is only the act of communicating the experience, be it linguistically or symbolically, that exists outside the individual. If we are to explore concepts of femininity in the past, it is essential to extend the analysis of menstrual theories beyond a recognition of how they reflected and concurred with ideals of femininity to perceive such narratives as fundamental in the creation of those ideals. This webinar aims to open up critical appraisals of the relationship between dictates of menstruation and the construction of femininity rather than aim to identify any linear progression of biological ‘truths’.

Well researched, original and unpublished articles on (but not restricted to) the following topics are invited for presentation.
