Introduction

Former United States Secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, once said,” Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world”. Women have been shattering glass ceilings across diverse fields, including science, marking a transformative era where their remarkable contributions and leadership redefine the boundaries of possibility and pave the way for future generations. From my earliest memories, I've seen my mother and my aunt balancing the demands of both family and a thriving career ,my grandmother contributing her wisdom to scientific endeavors. Their journeys have not only inspired me but have also highlighted the transformative power of women.

Empowering Women in Science Leadership: Catalysts for Sustainable Development

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations are in line with the goals of the current dynamic landscape, wherein the vital role of women and girls in science leadership emerges as a catalyst.

The SDGs and women's leadership in science have a particularly deep connection. Women scientists make a vital contribution to moving mankind towards sustainable development, from the goal of combating climate change in SDG 13 to the pursuit of high-quality education indicated in SDG 4.

Developing Fair Scientific Leadership: A Critical Strategic Need

Promoting women's and girls' active engagement in science leadership is becoming increasingly important in the context of sustainable development, and it is closely related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Whatever their personal ties, the tales of strong women reflect a story that captures the spirit of inclusivity, sustainability, and revolutionary creativity. The tale highlights the significant connection between women's leadership in science and the SDGs. Women scientists are essential to advancing humanity toward sustainable development, whether they are addressing the urgency of climate action mentioned in SDG 13 or the call for high-quality education in SDG .In addition to questioning social norms, their contributions close important gaps in scientific knowledge and policy development, paving the way for a more robust and inclusive global paradigm.As we approach this new era of sustainability, it is becoming more and more obvious that fostering the leadership of women and girls in science is not only a noble endeavor but also a tactical requirement.

It is not only a question of equality but also a strategic imperative to acknowledge and actively include women in a variety of fields, especially in leadership roles in science. This will help to shape a prosperous and sustainable future. The decision-making processes and results in scientific undertakings are enhanced by the vast variety of viewpoints, experiences, and approaches that women bring to the table. Women's involvement in research is essential to releasing latent potential and promoting creativity. Women's diverse experiences, perspectives, and methods of problem-solving provide a more thorough comprehension of complicated problems and the development of creative solutions. Diversity of thought is not only morally necessary but also practically advantageous in science leadership, as it guarantees the robustness, adaptability, and reflection of a wider range of societal requirements in our plans and solutions.

Furthermore, tackling the complex issues delineated in international frameworks such as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations requires gender-inclusive leadership. The tale of women in science is one of resiliency, tenacity, and ground-breaking accomplishments. Women continue to reshape their roles in science, much like the legendary Marie Curie, who bucked the conventions of her day and irrevocably altered the course of human understanding and discovery.As the first female Nobel laureate and pioneer in the field of radioactivity, Marie Curie's extraordinary journey established a standard for succeeding generations. Her legacy goes beyond awards; it stands for the bravery to defy social norms and the guts to pursue knowledge regardless of one's gender. The heritage of women in science, personified by trailblazers like Marie Curie, deserves more than just acknowledgement at this pivotal point in scientific advancement; rather, it demands a seismic shift in the foundation of our scientific institutions. The evolution we see is a story of resilience against systemic prejudices, not just a timeline of accomplishments. But the trip is far from done.

Gender is still an unnecessary barrier to knowledge, and to reduce the hardships and achievements of women in science to a footnote in our past is to miss the obvious.
