The Harvard International Review (HIR) is inviting high school students (Grades 9–12) to submit entries for the HIR Academic Writing Contest 2025. This is an international competition, open to students from all countries. The deadline to submit your article is January 2, 2026.

The Harvard International Review is a respected quarterly magazine published by Harvard University. Since 1979, it has featured analysis and interviews on global affairs from world leaders, Nobel Laureates, diplomats, and scholars.
HIR has published commentary from:

- 4 UN Secretaries-General
- 4 Nobel Economics Prize winners
- 7 Nobel Peace Prize winners
About the HIR Academic Writing Contest
The HIR Academic Writing Contest was launched in 2020 to encourage high school students worldwide to write about international affairs. Students submit a short analytical article, and all entries are reviewed by editors from the Harvard International Review.
Selected finalists are invited for HIR Defense Day, where they deliver a 15-minute presentation and oral defense directly to Harvard judges.

Theme A: Global Commons and Shared Resources
Examples: climate change, oceans, biodiversity, outer space, global environmental governance.
Theme B: Emerging Powers in a Changing Global Order
Examples: India, China, Middle East, Africa, shifting geopolitical alliances.
Theme C: Resilient Cities and Urban Futures
Examples: smart cities, climate adaptation, migration, sustainable urban planning.

Submission Guidelines (Important)
- Articles must address a global issue.
- Acceptable themes include: Agriculture, Business, Cybersecurity, Defense, Education, Immigration, Energy & Environment, Public Health, Science & Technology, Space, Trade, Transportation, and Global Politics.
- Articles must be analytical, research-backed, and written from a global (not U.S.-only) perspective.
- 800–1,200 words (Tables, diagrams, and footnotes not counted.)
- Balanced, well-researched, fact-checked
- No opinion-only writing or op-eds
- Use traditional American spelling
- Follow AP Style
- Maintain a culturally sensitive tone
AI Usage Policy
- Use of ChatGPT or any AI writing tool is strictly prohibited.
- All submissions are screened using multiple AI-detection tools.
- High AI scores = automatic disqualification.
Citations
- Use hyperlinks for digital sources
- Non-digital sources must follow AP Style
- Every factual claim must be properly cited

Contest Prizes
- Every participant who submits an article receives a certificate of completion.

- High Commendation Prize – HIR Certificate
Global Medals
- Bronze Medal: Top 20% (Certificate + Name on Website)
- Silver Medal: Top 10% (Certificate + Name on Website)
- Gold Medal: Top 3% (Certificate + Name on Website)
- Finalists participate in HIR Defense Day and are eligible for medals based on scores.
