About FUKT #24—The City Issue

FUKT is an independent, advertising-free magazine dedicated to contemporary drawing.

Its 24th issue will examine the city in its different forms—not only as architecture or infrastructure, but also as something shaped by communities, movement, politics, nature, memory and everyday routines.

The open call seeks different ways of observing, documenting, mapping, questioning or imagining urban life through drawing.

Theme: The City

Submitted work may explore subjects such as:

  • Architecture and infrastructure
  • Public spaces
  • Housing
  • Transport and movement
  • Migration and displacement
  • Urban nature
  • Borders
  • Crowds and solitude
  • Neighbourhoods and communities
  • Inequality and different urban experiences
  • Daily routines
  • Memory and traces of the past
  • Imagined or future cities
  • Urban growth, decline, rebuilding and repair

Artists may also submit another interpretation if the work meaningfully engages with the idea of the city.

Who Can Submit?

The call is intended for artists whose practice involves drawing.

Specific age, nationality, residency, education and professional-experience requirements have not been stated. Applicants should check the official open-call page for any subsequent clarification.

What Can You Submit?

Applicants must submit:

  • An existing drawing project or body of work
  • Between 5 and 10 images
  • Work connected with the theme “City”

This is not a commission. FUKT is not asking artists to create new work specifically for the magazine.

Submission Requirements

Submit one PDF containing:

  • Five to ten images from one project or connected body of work
  • Your name
  • Your city or country of residence
  • A short biography
  • A short text about the submitted work, project or artistic practice
  • A link to your website, Instagram account or portfolio, where applicable

The PDF must not exceed 10 MB.

File-Naming Format

Name the PDF as follows:

Firstname_Surname_thecityissue.pdf

For example:

Aman_Kumar_thecityissue.pdf

How to Submit?

  1. Select 5–10 images from one existing drawing project.
  2. Prepare a short biography.
  3. Write a brief explanation of the work and its connection with the city theme.
  4. Add your name, location and portfolio or social-media link.
  5. Combine everything into one PDF of no more than 10 MB.
  6. Name the file in the prescribed format.
  7. Email it to opencall@fukt.de by September 15.

Do not send WeTransfer, Google Drive or other external download links.

Publication and Copyright

  • Selected artists will be fully credited.
  • Artists retain copyright in their work.
  • Images will be used in the magazine and for promotion connected with the issue.
  • Any unrelated use must be agreed separately.
  • Selected artists will receive complimentary copies.
  • FUKT cannot provide publication fees.

Growing up in a small village, I witnessed how capable young people quietly missed opportunities—not because they lacked talent, but because information never reached them. Experiencing exclusion and unequal access to opportunities myself, I came to believe that no young person should be left behind simply because they never knew an opportunity existed.
