The Embassy of Japan in India has announced that applications will open soon for the 2027 JET Programme—Assistant Language Teacher (ALT).

Selected participants will live and work in Japan, assisting Japanese Teachers of English in schools. The approximate first-year remuneration is 4.02 million yen—around ₹23.3 lakh. Applicants do not need prior Japanese-language knowledge, although Japanese proficiency may strengthen an application.

Before applications open, the Embassy is organising a free online briefing for anyone interested in the ALT programme.

About the JET Programme ALT Position

Most JET Programme participants work as Assistant Language Teachers. ALTs support English-language education in public or private schools and local boards of education across Japan.

An ALT generally assists a Japanese Teacher of English rather than independently leading every class. Actual responsibilities can differ according to the school, number of assigned schools and teaching approach of the supervising teacher.

Duties of an Assistant Language Teacher

Typical responsibilities include:

Assisting Japanese teachers during English classes
Helping prepare teaching and classroom materials
Supporting communicative English activities
Planning or supervising English clubs, sports and other extracurricular activities
Organising cultural and international-exchange programmes
Introducing students to another country and culture

Applicants should be flexible because working conditions and responsibilities vary between placements.

Remuneration and Appointment

First-Year Remuneration

Participants receive approximately:

4.02 million yen, equivalent to around ₹23.3 lakh, during the first appointment year

Remuneration increases with subsequent appointments.

Duration

The appointment is normally for one year from the day after arrival in Japan. It may be extended:

Up to three years in normal circumstances
Up to five years in exceptional cases

Working Hours and Leave

Standard work schedule: 35 hours per week
Typical working days: Monday to Friday
Holidays: Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese national holidays
Paid leave: At least 10 days

Participants may occasionally be required to work on weekends or national holidays.

Placement

Participants may be assigned to local government organisations and schools anywhere in Japan.

Applicants can express a placement preference, but their requested location is not guaranteed.

Eligibility: What Is Confirmed So Far?

The Embassy has announced that applications for the 2027 ALT intake will open soon, but the final 2027 application guidelines have not yet been published.

The Embassy’s currently displayed ALT information indicates that applicants are generally expected to:

Hold an Indian passport
Have a bachelor’s degree in any subject
Possess strong spoken and written English
Be interested in Japan and willing to learn more about the country
Be prepared for living and working conditions different from those in India
Meet the programme’s health, previous-residence and previous-participation conditions
Follow Japanese laws

Teaching experience, an English or Education degree, TEFL/TESL qualifications, Japanese-language ability and international experience may strengthen an application but are not presented as compulsory general requirements.

Important 2027 Eligibility Warning

The ALT webpage still contains dates from the previous application cycle, including:

Bachelor’s degree by July 2026
Email submission deadline of November 24, 2025
Interview notifications in January 2026

These are not reliable deadlines for the 2027 intake. Applicants should wait for the updated 2027 guidelines before determining their final eligibility or submitting documents.

Do not use the older application forms or audio-submission form unless the Embassy confirms that they remain valid for 2027.
